Fast-growing Accommodation and Food Services industry - more jobs over the next 5 years

Posted: 14th Feb

The future of Australian jobs is strong, with the number of workers in most industries expected to grow over the next five years. There are likely to be around 886,000 MORE JOBS BY 2023.

Service industries set to boom

It is expected the TOP INDUSTRIES FOR JOBS GROWTH over the next five years (to 2023) will be:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance
  • Construction
  • Education and Training
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services

Employment is projected to increase in 17 of the 19 broad industries over the five years to May 2023. Health Care and Social Assistance is projected to make the largest contribution to employment growth (increasing by 250,300), followed by Construction (118,800), Education and Training (113,000) and Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (106,600).

Almost 2 in every 3 new jobs created will come from these four industries.

Reasons for jobs growth in these industries

An ageing population, the NDIS (Australia's National Disability Insurance Scheme), and growing demand for childcare and home-care based services is driving jobs growth.

Investment in infrastructure (like roads, railways and airports) means jobs will continue to grow in the engineering construction sector. Workers will also be needed to build home for our growing population.

The number of school-aged children is growing and there is strong demand for adult and community education. More people are working part-time and in non-teaching support roles.

Demand is growing for qualified workers, especially in computer system design, and the management and consulting services sectors.

Jobs grow to support leisure activities

Australians love their sport and are becoming more health conscious. Jobs in the Arts and Recreation Services industry will grow over the next five years off the back of strong involvement in sport at all levels and ongoing demand for personal fitness services.

The fast-growing Accommodation and Food Services industry in Australia will also offer up more jobs over the next five years. This is backed by strong domestic and international tourism and more Australians making time for social coffee and dining experiences.

Higher skilled jobs on the rise

JOBS EXPECTED TO GROW THE MOST over the coming five years include:

  • Aged and Disabled Carers
  • Registered Nurses
  • Child Carers
  • Software and Applications Programmers
  • Waiters
  • Education Aides

Over 90% of new jobs over the next five years will need education beyond school and some jobs will need more training than they used to. Many professional and service roles demand university or VET (Vocational Education and Training) qualifications.

That said, many of the jobs expected to grow strongly need little or no formal training.

Lower skilled jobs can also offer rewarding careers or pathways to other jobs.
