JOB DESCRIPTION


RESPONSIBILITIES:
 

  • Essential qualifications must be current for the duration of employment
  • Must maintain a sound level of physical fitness for the duration of employment with the Shire of Broome
  • Work toward obtaining further lifeguard qualifications
  • Assess the prevailing beach and surf conditions at Cable Beach and undertake risk assessments in regards to swimmer safety
  • Perform functions outlined in section 7.3 and 7.4 of the Shire of Broome Local Government Property and Public Places Local Law
  • Perform all duties in accordance with the Shire of Broome, Beach Services Standard Operating Procedures
  • To cite and enforce safe bathing areas for the public
  • Perform surf rescues and resuscitation when necessary
  • To carry out first aid
  • Warn and advise swimmers when conditions are dangerous
  • Promote water safety and stinger education/awareness
  • Perform daily stinger drags
  • Set up lifeguard station with appropriate rescue equipment and complete lifeguard log books in a satisfactory manner
  • Clean and maintain equipment to appropriate operational condition
  • Inspect Shire property and report damage or malfunctions
  • To advise and/or warn the public of the requirements as specified in the Litter Act, Dog Act, the Control of Vehicles (Off Road) Areas Act and the Local Government Act
  • Attend fortnightly lifeguard training sessions to maintain skills and fitness
  • Liaise with the Sport & Recreation Facilities Coordinator with regards to the daily operations associated with the position
  • Other duties as required that assist in the overall safe, effective and efficient operation of beach supervision

 
Essential
 
Current Certificates/Qualifications
 

  • Surf Bronze Medallion qualification or equivalent Cert II Public Safety Aquatic Rescue, or APOLA Award
  • Senior First Aid Certificate or equivalent
  • Advanced Resuscitation Techniques or equivalent
  • C-Class Driver’s License
  • Working with Children Check

 
Skills, Attributes, Knowledge
 

  • Basic time management skills
  • Developed public relations and interpersonal skills
  • Basic written communication and record keeping skills
  • Sound knowledge of First Aid and Rescue techniques
  • Basic knowledge of regulations and Local Laws applying to the operation and use of public beaches
  • Sound knowledge of surf lifesaving equipment
